Once proclaimed "The Standard of the World," Cadillac has more recently struggled to reach a new generation of younger buyers. The addition of the excellent ATS compact sedan was a big step forward, and the XTS aims to follow suit on the other side of Cadillac's lineup. As the luxury brand's newest flagship, the 2014 Cadillac XTS strikes a fine balance between exterior styling, interior refinement, and modern (if potentially confusing) technology. Smaller than the geriatric DTS it replaced, the chiseled XTS bridges the gap between midsize and full-size luxury sedans. Starting at around $45,000, it faces a wide range of rivals, from the more performance-oriented Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class to the more performance-oriented BMW 5 Series and Audi A6.
Used 2014 Cadillac XTS Prices
Starting at around $45,000, the 2014 Cadillac XTS undercuts entry-level prices on the relatively smaller, mid-range sedans BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Lexus GS. This year, the XTS has new competition in the capacious Acura RLX, which starts a few thousand more than the Cadillac's base price. The Infiniti M also starts a few thousand higher than the XTS, while the Audi A6 opens a few thousand lower (albeit in 4-cylinder form), as does the V6 Lincoln MKS. Like other luxury cars, the price of the XTS can add up quickly. Load up a top-of-the-line turbo version, and the Cadillac's price could hit $70,000. Drive the used 2014 Cadillac XTS
The Cadillac XTS strikes a commendable balance between comfort and handling. The full-size sedan is especially adept at crossing long stretches of pavement, staying balanced even when the road is scarred. Cadillac's ability to soak up potholes is due in large part to its standard Magnetic Ride Control suspension, which adjusts to changing road conditions in milliseconds. The XTS's hydraulic power steering system, used on all-wheel drive models, is precise and responsive. Overall comfort is enhanced by a quiet cabin so well insulated that we had to check the tachometer to make sure the engine was running. On that front, the standard engine is a 305-horsepower V6 that performs adequately but not exceptionally well. When the XTS launched in 2013, we craved more power. This year, Cadillac was delivered with a twin-turbo V6. This optional engine produces 410 horsepower and comes standard with AWD.
indoor comfort
Step inside the 2014 Cadillac XTS and you'll be greeted by a luxurious, impeccably assembled cabin. Comfortable leather-trimmed seats are standard, and top-tier models are even equipped with leather-wrapped interior panels. The 3-passenger rear seat offers good legroom and a huge 18 cubic foot trunk. Cadillac reckons the XTS can swallow five or more bags. But not everything is perfect within XTS. While the standard 8-inch touchscreen central controller is visually appealing and offers haptic feedback (where the screen feels like you're touching it), the standard CUE system isn't intuitive. It requires a steep learning curve to operate what should be simple features like audio and climate settings.
exterior styling
The Cadillac XTS has the angular, wedge-shaped profile of its CTS and ATS sedan siblings, but in a longer, larger shape. Design highlights include windswept headlights and side pleats. As befits this large sedan, there are sizable wheels: 19-inch on most models and 20-inch versions on higher-end models. Dual tailpipes also add a sporty feel. Four-wheel drive models are badged "XTS4" to indicate that all wheels are being driven. Less obvious but useful is a capless refueling system which means you never have to unscrew the cap before refueling.

DRIVER AWARENESS PACK HEAD SCREEN
This system combines advanced safety features that constantly monitor the surroundings to prevent accidents. In addition to Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Alert, the system features Safety Seat Alert, which literally shakes the driver's seat as a warning of hazards such as drifting out of a lane or hitting an object.
While head-up displays are nothing new in the automotive world, the Cadillac XTS takes this fighter-inspired feature to the next level with a full-color display, speed limit reminders, and navigation instructions.
Standard Features
Even if you spend less on a base XTS model, you'll still get a lot for your money. Among the niceties are dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable steering wheel, rear park assist, and an 8-speaker Bose sound system with CD/HD radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, and USB inputs. The upgraded trims bring features like a backup camera, heated and ventilated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, a 12.3-inch driver information display, and the Driver Awareness Package. Safety features include 10 airbags, GM's OnStar communication service with automatic crash response and Brembo performance brakes. Free maintenance is standard for four years or 50,000 miles.
factory options
All-wheel drive is available on base V6 trims of the XTS (it's standard on turbocharged models). Other options vary by model and include navigation, a 14-speaker Bose Studio Surround Sound audio system, a dual-screen DVD rear-seat entertainment system and a moonroof. A new park assist feature included in higher models allows the XTS to be parallel parked with minimal driver intervention. Additional safety is available with the Driver Assistance Package, which includes adaptive cruise control and automatic forward and reverse braking if the system detects an imminent collision.
Engine and Transmission
Two engine options are available in the 2014 Cadillac XTS. Base models use a 3.6-liter direct-injected V6 that produces 305 horsepower. Those looking for more power should consider the twin-turbo version of that engine, which bumps the horsepower up appreciably to 410 horsepower. The base engine can be all-wheel drive instead of the standard front-wheel drive, while turbo models come exclusively with all-wheel drive. The AWD in the XTS uses Haldex technology and a limited slip differential to transfer power front to rear and side to side. It is useful in Snowbelt states where traction may be compromised. Both engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The standard V6 runs on regular unleaded fuel, while the turbo requires premium fuel. 3.6 liter V6 V6 turbo of 3.6 liters
305 horsepower at 6,800 rpm
264 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/28 mpg (front-wheel drive), 17/26 mpg (AWD)
410 horsepower at 6,000 rpm
369 pound-feet of torque at 1,900-5,600 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/24 mpg
KBB Vehicle Review and Classification Methodology
Our expert ratings come from hours of driving and number calculations to ensure you choose the best car for you. We thoroughly test and review every new SUV, car, truck or minivan for sale in the US and benchmark it against the competition. When all this dust settles, we'll have our assessments. We require new qualifications each time an entirely new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle is launched. Additionally, we reevaluate these ratings when a new generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle upgrade; Basically, we revamp a car in the middle of its production run (usually around 2-3 years) with a minor facelift, usually with feature and technology updates. Rather than pulling random numbers out of thin air or a meaningless checklist, KBB editors rank a vehicle where it belongs in its class. Before any car can earn its KBB rating, it must prove that it's better (or worse) than the other cars it's competing with, while trying to get you to spend your money buying or renting. Our editors drive and live with a certain vehicle. We ask all the correct questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and the driving train, the driving and handling, the characteristics, the comfort and, of course, the price. Does it fulfill the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is to efficiently commute to work in the city, keep your family safe, make you feel like you've made it to the top - or that you're on your way - or make you feel like you've finally found the right partner for your Lifestyle.) We take each vehicle we test through the mundane—parking, lane changing, reversing, cargo space, and cargo—as well as the essentials: acceleration, braking, handling, interior silence and comfort, build quality, quality of materials, reliability.
