In short
Opened in 2018, the luxurious AC Hotel is Marriott's latest development, aiming to be sleek and modern with a millennial feel. Its 169 rooms, complete with gorgeous platform beds, Nespresso machines, and TVs with Netflix, reflect that aesthetic, as does the nightly tapas menu and library that offers a coworking space. But beyond that, travelers will find the same reliable Marriott features, like a 12th-floor pool and gym, and restaurants that cover all your needs, from breakfast (additional fee) to a late-night tapas menu. Plenty of meeting space is also available, catering to the property's many business guests, who are also drawn to the AC's location, a five-minute walk from the convention center. Leisure travelers will find Old Montreal and the Cathedral of Mary, Queen of the World within walking distance. Travelers can also considerLoews Hotel Vogue, which has a bit more of a boutique personality.

AC Hotel by Marriott Montreal Centro

A sleek, modern addition to downtown Montreal hotels
A gleaming glass and chrome skyscraper, the AC Hotel is Marriott's answer to millennial modernism. The look is young and fresh, but totally business-friendly, and although it has 169 rooms spread over 12 floors (topped off by luxury apartments up to the 35th floor), it still has a boutique hotel feel thanks to its chic decor. The lobby, with its triple-height windows, plank-beamed ceilings, recessed lighting in the stairwell, feels grand without being stuffy. The stairs are glass, chrome and concrete that separate the lobby from the mezzanine. Shelf dividers also divide up some of the spaces, such as the main path to the front door and the adjacent cocktail lounge. Oversized pottery and succulents in terrariums add the finishing touches. At the opposite end of the foyer, an elegant library area complete with a fireplace and black leather armchairs provides another cozy space to linger.
This Montreal outpost opened in 2018, and on our visit, it was still immaculate, with no stains on its tall windows. AC is part of the new wave of Marriott hotels designed for the instagrammable generation. In addition to photogenic lobbies and rooms, they offer coworking spaces and late-night tapas snacks. Much of it, however, is just added showcase to Marriott's tried-and-true formula, and most of the brand's familiar trappings are present.
Due to its downtown location and Marriott brand, the hotel appears to cater primarily to corporate travelers. During our stay, there were many wealthy businessmen having cocktails in the lounge or logging in with their laptops while sitting at the long communal reception desks. But you might also spot some stylish couples exiting the elevators and heading out for a day out. There were many Americans among the two groups of guests, and the staff were quick to switch to English with any guests who faltered in French.

Location
Walking distance to Old Montreal's convention center and historic attractions

(If location is your main concern, there are plenty of opportunities to compare prices.) The city's convention center is just a 5-minute walk away, and the US consulate is just a 3-minute walk away. That said, tourists will also find themselves within easy reach of several notable points of interest, including the gates of Chinatown (two minutes), St. Patrick's Basilica (four minutes), and Montreal's Notre-Dame Basilica (10 minutes). ). . minutes). The charming cobblestone streets and historic buildings of Old Montreal can also be reached in a 10- to 15-minute walk, along with the city's harbor (a top destination for those coming and going on cruise ships). Spotless, tastefully modern rooms with Netflix and mini-fridges
The same fresh, streamlined and uniform appearance of the public spaces is also reflected in the property's guest rooms. Neutral colors -- light wood floors and mocha walls -- keep rooms tasteful, though a little more generic than your average boutique hotel. (Conspicuously lacking any hint of color.) Rectangular lamps and table lamps also skew the style towards the modern. Tobacco-hued leather armchairs, side tables, and long table/bench combinations furnish the rooms along with large platform beds. Modular headboards with built-in nightstand shelves, lights (including swan neck reading lights) and padded leather back anchor the room, and the bedding is tasteful with fluffy white comforters and pillows.
Standard Rooms are incredibly spacious by urban standards, with high ceilings and enough room to toss your luggage and still do a somersault. (Accessible rooms are the ultimate in space, with plenty of room for a wheelchair to make a turn.) Standard rooms can also offer two queen beds, and suites offer more square footage to boost rates.
Amenities are as modern as the decor: Giant flat-screen TVs are equipped with Netflix and free Wi-Fi, electronic safes, mini-fridges stocked with bottled water, and Nespresso machines are available. Guests will also find traditional hotel amenities like irons and ironing boards, ice buckets, pool towels, bathrobes and slippers.
Bathrooms have the same subtle gray-and-white color scheme, with giant vanities that offer plenty of room to move your items around. Hairdryers, lighted mirrors, and Essential Elements toiletries also help with hygiene, as do free vanity kits complete with shoe gloves. Tub/shower combinations contain handheld showerheads and rainfall showerheads.

Characteristics
A strong lineup, including a rooftop pool and plenty of meeting space
AC Hotel's features are solid, and in many cases surpass what's offered at pricier properties in the area. That's certainly the case with the hotel's 12th-floor pool. While not that big, it offers stellar panoramic views of downtown Montreal. Here you can also find a sauna and a jacuzzi, making it a small haven of wellness within the property. The 24-hour fitness center is also on this floor, and like the pool, it has jaw-dropping views from floor-to-ceiling windows, along with LifeCycle machines (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals) and free weights. A water dispenser and a selection of magazines complete the spa atmosphere. It's worth mentioning that this pool and gym is far superior to ground floor or basement setups we've seen elsewhere.
The hotel also highlights the on-site gastronomic offer: on the ground floor there is a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant serving meals, the accompanying AC Lounge, with signature cocktails and a sophisticated tapas menu, and the AC Kitchen, where a breakfast buffet. outside (although not included in rates). While the menus look amazing, it's worth mentioning that the food we tried was mediocre at best. A small shop adjacent to reception sells snacks and forgotten toiletries for guests -- a welcome pit stop for anyone hungry at midnight -- especially since this hotel lacks mini-fridges or room service. Ice machines are also located adjacent to the rooms, and the rooms are stocked with buckets of ice.
The lobby has a club-like workspace with two public computers, plus nice leather seating, a warm fireplace, and lots of hardcover and ceramic books that complete the library feel. There's also an impressive amount of meeting space (5,900 square feet) with rooms that can accommodate anything from small single-digit meetings to 150 people meeting together. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
Guests generally praise the staff for providing helpful service, and they may also provide concierge services.
