Yandereis the combination of two Japanese words: yanderu, meaning "sick" or "insane", and deredere, meaning "in love". These types of anime characters present themselves as lovable and cute in front of their potential lovers. But they harbor unhealthy obsessions and can become violent and unpredictable when their loved one is taken from them.
RELATED:The most powerful anime villains ever
Yandere are often seen as chaotic characters in anime. They usually have dead eyes, full of blood, and have a good laugh. They are overwhelmingly jealous and want their girlfriend to be with them and her alone. It is not uncommon for a yandere to murder her lover's entire family with the intention of having them all for herself. But within that archetype, theFemale characters showed the yandere nature best?
Updated May 20, 2023 by Sarah Prado:If there's one archetype that makes anime interesting, it's a yandere girl. Most of them can go from being the cutest and cutest girls to some of the deadliest girls ever.
Not all of them are necessarily bloodthirsty or want to kill someone, but their violent tendencies come through and terrify those around them. But those who are comfortable taking a few or many lives to protect the object of their obsession will do so in a messy way. These are some of the best female yandere characters in the anime world that are terrifying yet seductive to watch.
20 Belarus (Hetalia: Axis Powers)
Belarus is in love with her older brother Russia and wants to marry him. He doesn't feel that way about her and tries to avoid her as much as possible, but that doesn't deter her. Even afterall other countries leave Russia,She stays with him and explains that she never wants to leave, though he thinks it's a little creepy.
It also doesn't help that Belarus carries a knife and isn't afraid to use it for the slightest trouble. She may not be the creepiest fool out there, but Belarus is still a woman most people don't want to mess with.
19 Kurenai Rin (Big Order)
While most yandere girls out there are in love with the target of their obsession, Kurenai Rin is on the other end. In fact, she hates Hoshimiya Eiji, the boy she is supposed to murder. She is violent and not afraid to hurt anyone who stands in the way of her goals, even if they are innocent. Kurenai poked him andother people give their views.
She is only obsessed with him because she wants to be the one to kill him. Kurenai may not be the traditional yandere woman, but she fits almost every criteria for a yandere woman.
18 Cybelle (Carole and Tuesday)
In the short time she's here, Cybelle is making sure her performance counts. Your obsession with Tuesday is a frightening sight. At first glance, she might just seem like a big Tuesday fan, but it's clear there's a lot more to it than that. Ignoring everyone who isn't Tuesday, she declares that she loves them, but that "love" is more obsessive and possessive. Cybelle even tries to start a new group with Tuesday and GoesCarole has completely disappeared from the scene. On Tuesday, before she went on stage for her performance, Cybelle asked her for a hug and bit her on the neck, leaving a mark.
Losing to Angela, Cybelle became angry with Tuesday when she refused to join her and left a box with something that would hurt Tuesday's hands. When she was caught, Cybelle explained that Tuesday deserved it because he broke her heart. It was disturbing to watch it all play out because Cybelle made everything she did sound justified.
17 Anna Nishikinomiya (Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist)
She may seem sweet and innocent at first, but Anna is far from that. life in one worldwhere all "immoral" activities and adult/dirty jokes are prohibitedhas clearly affected Anna and her growth as she becomes obsessed with Tanukichi Okuma after they accidentally kiss. This moment reveals her yandere side and she is willing to do anything to get closer to him.
Although not as violent as most yandere females, Anna shows her sinister side when she threatens other females to stay away from the tanukichi. She claims she loves him, but Anna may not be able to tell the difference between love and lust.
16 Yukako Yamagishi (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable)
Yukako is a beautiful and popular girl who could have any man she wants, but she only has eyes for Koichi Hirose. Unfortunately, this love is terrifying for him as she is very obsessed with him andMost guys feel sorry for him. Despite appearing sweet and reserved, Yukako is quick to react with violence and anger when anyone (even Koichi) opposes her. She even kidnaps Koichi and tries to brainwash him into falling in love with her.
RELATED:Anime: Best Female Tsundere Characters
She is often considered the first yandere in manga, and it's easy to see how she set the standard for this archetype. Future Diary's Yuno Gasai may be the poster child for yandere women in anime, but Yukako can be seen as the main reason they exist in the first place.
15 Mizuki Himeji (Baka zum Testen)
Mizuki is mostly a very smart and gentle girl. But if she drank too much or gets jealous around girlsis Akihisa too close, that's a whole other story. When this happens, she is quick to strike and becomes somewhat fierce, but is quite tame compared to most yandere females.
She's probably the gentlest yandere out there, but Mizuki still ticks a lot of the boxes for a yandere. At least she's not bloodthirsty or out to kill anyone yet. That's a big plus, but it's better not to test the waters.
14 Megumi Shimizu (Shiki)
It would be easy to feel sorry for Megumi when she just wanted to leave the village, but her transformation into a shiki leaves her with little sympathy. She became so obsessed with Natsuno that she stalked him. He knew it too but did nothing to stop her. Her obsession with him was so strong that she killed Tohru Mutou just because he was close to Natsuno. She even killed her childhood friend Kaori to get close to him.
She didn't mind killing the villagers and becoming a Shiki was a good thing. To think that the villagers were constantly picking on herbecause of her appearanceIt's no surprise that she happily killed most of them after becoming Shiki.
13 Kofuku (Noragami)
Kofuku may not seem like your typical yandere, but this sweet and lively girl has a dark side that even Bishamon, the goddess of war, doesn't want to mess with. She is aware of what is happening around her and is not afraid to threaten the gods if they threaten her or hurt someone she cares about. Although she is not worshiped and is considered an unnamed god, most gods shun her for fear of her unusual abilities and power.
After watchingBishamon and Yato fight,Kofuku opened a valve to stop them. She loves to have fun and be a little mischievous, but it usually creates a lot of chaos in the world around her. All the characters should be happy that Daikoku is there to keep them in check because Kofuku could potentially destroy the world if she wanted to.
12 Satou Matsuzaka (Happy Sugar Life)
This young teen may seem sweet and innocent at first, but she is one of the most disturbing yandere girls out there. Satou had a very rough life as a child and has a very distorted view of love. She develops a rather unhealthy bond with Shio, an eight-year-old girl abandoned by her mother. She took in the young girl and they lived together, but Satou kept Shio locked up under the guise of protection.
RELATED:Forgotten 1970s animes that are great
If anyone ever caught a glimpse of Shio or met him, Satou would kill themtwisted way to protect her.She even killed her best friend Shoko when she found out that Satou had technically kidnapped the young girl.
11 Himiko Toga (My Hero Academy)
Himiko is a pretty twisted person, just like her peers, but it's her twisted view of love that makes her deeply terrifying. Once she bonds with someone and "loves" them, she is ready to hurt anyone who stands in her way or feels threatened by them. She is very possessive of Izuku Midoriya and truly believes that what she feels for him is affection, even though she tries to attack him. The only other person she feels affection for is Ochako Ururaka, who she tries to be because she loves her.
Their sadistic tendencies and general behaviorenough to scare most people of what she could possibly do. She is very happy when she is trying to kill someone, smiles and has a creepy look of lovesickness.
10 Misa Amane (Death Note)
Misa may not have the crazy yandere face, but she sure has a lot of yandere characteristics. She was more than OK with giving up half her life to get the Shinigami Eyes to help Light. She was obsessed with him and swore her life to serve him. Light uses her feelings for him to her own advantage and she never once sees him as evil.
She's perfectly fine killing anyone who doesstands in the way of the light and his goal.As long as she remains Light's primary tool, Misa is willing to shorten her life as many times as necessary, killing anyone he says must die.
9 Konishi (Charlotte)
Konishi is, to put it mildly, madly in love with his classmate, Oikawa. Unfortunately, he fell in love with the innocent Ayumi Otosaka after being transferred to school. After that, Oikawa started neglecting Konishi and spending more time with Ayumi.
RELATED:The worst anime sisters ever
Konishi didn't like that and took matters into his own hands. On a normal school day, she follows Ayumi into the hallways and pulls out a box cutter. The twelve-year-old girl then tells her that she must die in order for Konishi to keep Oikawa all to herself.
8 Nina Einstein (Code Geass)
Nina is a quiet and shy student at Ashford AcademyMember of the student council. After a while on the series, she starts working for the government making weapons. She is so attached to Euphemia, a princess, that Nina mistakes her for a goddess and often asks her for emotional support. But after Euphemia's death, Nina's mental and physical health becomes unstable.
RELATED:Strongest psychic in anime, ranking
Their unhealthy attachment and one-sided love drives Nina insane. In her madness, Nina equips her Ashford's Ganymede Knightmare Frame with a prototype nuclear reactorit would destroy Tokyo. Fortunately, Nina is caught before anything bad can happen.
7 Akane Hiyama (Tyrant of Love)
Akane is the idol of the school and acts as an angel to everyone around her. But when it comes to her crush, Seiji Aino, she turns into a psychopathic character. She is madly in love with him and will kill anyone who tries to date him.
Amazingly, even Seiji is not safe from his violent nature. Whenever she sees him with another girl ("cheat: her," as she likes to put it), Akane doesn't hesitate to stab him multiple times. Even though all the characters are immortal, that doesn't excuse Akane's yandere tendencies, as they call it, still feeling pain.
6 Ringo Oginome (Pinguintrommel)
In Penguindrum, Ringo is a student at Ohka Garden Girls' High School. Before it was revealed that she had a yandere nature, the anime already showed fans how mentally unstable she was. Ringo Oginome's older sister was killed in a terrorist attack, leading to the disintegration of her family. This caused her to act like her deceased sister in hopes that this could save her family.
Ringo becomes a stalker and pursues Keiju Tabuki, her sister's crush, to the point of obsession. When he becomes engaged, Ringo drugs both Keiju and Shoma Takakura, her friend. She then drags her "lover" into the bedroom and tries to molest him while pretending to be his fiancée, even wearing a wig to look like her. This scene definitely willgive the fans goosebumps. Luckily, Shoma wakes up and stops them before it goes too far.
5 Minatsuki Takami (Deadman Wonderland)
Minatsuki, also known as Hummingbird, is the younger sister of Yō Takami in Deadman Wonderland. She was a normal girl until one day an earthquake happened while she was in the garden with her mother.Minatsuki's mother decided to save her plantsinstead of saving his daughter. From here it was downhill. Minatsuki became a liar and developed a sadistic personality.
Minatsuki convinces her brother that their father is abusing her, leading to an argument between them. After growing up, she kills her father with her own hands and enjoys watching her brother suffer, believing him to be the culprit. Minatsuki even reveals that she gets very excited when she sees someone suffering or in pain, even if it's her own brother.
4 Haruna Niekawa (Durarara)
As a former student at Raira Academy, a rumor spreads about Haruna Niekawa, forcing her to leave the Academy. Haruna Niekawa is in a relationship with her teacher Takashi Nasujima. She prides herself on being the owner of Saika, a demonic blade, but later finds out that she is not the true owner, but owns Saika's daughter.
After leaving school, Haruna continues to obsess about her "lover". Eventually, she finds out that Takashi cheated on her with Anri Sonohara. This makes her so angry that she starts attacking random people, including her father, to make them her "children" to attack Anri. When Haruna later manages to find Takashi, she smears her blood on his face to show him her "love". This is a clear sign of her yandere nature.
3 Lucy (Elfenlied)
Kaede is a Diclonius girl, an evolved species superior to humans.and is the main characterfrom the Elfenlied series. In the orphanage where she grew up, she was constantly bullied by the other children because she looked different. This bullying resulted in her personality splitting into three parts;Kaede, Lucy and Nyu. When the orphanage children beat and killed their puppy in front of them, Lucy, her psychotic personality, came out and killed all the children in a fit of rage.
As she grew up, she became incredibly sadistic. She cuts off limbs and blinds enemies, and as if that wasn't enough, she'd rather bleed them to death than take their lives. Despite her indifference to human life, she will neither harm nor kill Kouta, the male protagonist of the series, in front of his eyes.

In the anime, Sekai stabs Makoto, after which Kotonoha cuts off his head and shows it to her on the school's roof. While the meaning in Japanese shows that an extreme version of dorodere can be even more dangerous than yandere, the opposite has been believed for a long time in the West. They think that dorodere characters are a non-dangerous version of yandere, with disturbed thoughts, but without acting on them.
A harmless shock yandere character may have the same amount of obsessiveness as other yandere types would, though won't do anything violent towards those that also like their love interest, and will leave them alone.
Obsessives go the other route: they will simply kill everyone else. Yandere are, by and large, psychopaths. They have no sense of empathy for others–up to, and often including, their romantic partners. Is there a male Yandere? ›
