Result Yankees vs. Guardians: Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron judge Homer as New York wins do-or-die Game 5 (2023)

NEW YORK-- The ALDS is finally over and the New York Yankees are heading to the ALCS. On Tuesday afternoon, the Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians in a Game 5 winner-take-all at Yankee Stadium (NYY 5, CLE 1). Now they head to Houston to face the Astros for the American League championship as Cleveland heads home. The best of five ALDS went all the way and also saw two rains in eight days.

The decision to start Néstor Cortés worked out wonderfully for New York, and the Yankees' two power hitters, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, put runs on the board early to give them some breathing room. The Guardians played from behind throughout the game, and the decision to start Aaron Civale over Shane Bieber on a short rest backfired spectacularly.

Here are five takeaways from Game 5, plus a look at what comes next.

1. Stanton hit another home run in October

When the Guardians opted to start Civale in Game 5 over Bieber on a short rest, it certainly ended up being a questionable decision. Bieber is one of the best shooters in the game, and when your season is on the line, you want to be at your best. Instead, Cleveland opted for Civale, their fourth home run-prone starter.

"We feel like it's the right thing for him and for us," head coach Terry Francona said before Game 5, when asked about not using Bieber on a short rest in a winner-takes-all game.

The decision to start Civale immediately fell through. He opened the game with a four-pitch walk to Gleyber Torres, hit Anthony Rizzo with a two-hit shot, then hit a three-run homer to Stanton's opposite field to put the Guardians up a 3–0 opening hole. Here is Stanton's rocket:

The home run was Stanton's second of the series and 11th in 23 career postseason games, tied with Carlos Beltrán for most home runs in 23 career postseason games. Stanton has gone deep 10 times in his last 15 postseason games. With that home run, the Yankees scored first-inning run(s) in three of five ALDS games.

2. The ref hit a historic home run

It was a landmark season for the judge and the 62-home run man made more history in Game 5. His solo kick in the second inning gave the Yankees a 4-0 lead.and it was also his fourth career home run in a winner-take-all postseason game. This is the best story. Here's the judge's Game 5 blast:

Judge had previously dove in the 2017 and 2018 AL Wild Card Games and Game 5 of the 2020 ALDS. His game-winning fourth home run broke a tie with Stanton, Yogi Berra, Didi Gregorius, Troy O'Leary, and Moose Skowron. They all had three each. O'Leary is the only one of those players who never played for the Yankees.

The two starting pitcher decisions could not have been different. Instead of using Monday night's rain to get Bieber to start the rest short on Tuesday, the Guardians stuck with Civale, who allowed three runs and got one. However, Cleveland's bullpen did a good job holding the Yankees: four relievers held New York to two runs in 7 2/3 innings.

Meanwhile, the Yankees took advantage of the rain to start Cortés on a short rest in Game 5, and he was wonderful. He held the Guardians to a five-inning run and needed just 61 pitches to do so. With little rest, the Yankees could expect nothing more from Nasty Nestor. He was great.

Cleveland had two chances to get back into the game. First, the Guardians loaded the bases with one out in the third, but managed only one run on José Ramírez's sacrifice fly. Then, in the sixth, they got the top two runners on base, but two groundouts and a strikeout killed the play without a run crossing the plate. Those were his best chances to return in Game 5.

Otherwise, the Guardians never threatened Cortés and three Yankees relievers (Jonathan Loáisiga, Clay Holmes, Wandy Peralta). Peralta, it should be noted, has faced Josh Naylor and Gimenez in all five ALDS games. They are the top two left-handed hitters in Cleveland and Peralta has kept them 0-8 with four strikeouts and a double play. I can't do any better than that. Peralta is the first pitcher to appear in all five in a single ALDS.

One team left with their #4 starter rested and another team left with their #2 starter tired. The team that rolled the dice with their best available shooter won Game 5 and will go to the ALCS.

4. The Guardians had a bad challenge

It was a tough ALDS for Cleveland's replay coordinator. The Guardians went 0 for 2 in Game 2 challenges, although both calls were obviously correct on the first replay and should never have been contested (videos). Then, in Game 5, the Guardians didn't challenge Andrés Giménez's potential fourth inning single. Rizzo missed first base.

The Guardians were down 4-1 at the time. They needed all the base runners they could get. It might come to nothing (there were two outs in the inning), but you have to at least try for a challenge, right? Even if you think you've been eliminated, you're certainly close enough to challenge him. Not everything has to be a breeze. There's no shame in trying a pitch. Poor me.

5. Cleveland's historic losing streak continues

With the Game 5 loss, Cleveland has lost 11 straight postseason elimination games, extending the longest losing streak in baseball history. It goes back to Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. Cleveland has also lost eight straight winner-take-all postseason games. Here are their last 11 postseason elimination games:

  • SDLA game 20225: Yankees 5-1 loss (winner takes all)
  • Game 2 of the 2020 AL Wild Card Series:10-9 loss to the Yankees
  • LDS Game 2018 3:11-3 loss to the Astros
  • 2017 ALDS Game 5:Yankees 5-2 loss (winner takes all)
  • Game 7 of the 2016 World Series:8-7 Loss to Cubs (Winner Takes All)
  • 2013 American League Wild Card Game:4-0 loss to the Rays (winner takes all)
  • Game 7 of the 2007 ALCS:11-2 loss to Red Sox (winner takes all)
  • 2001 ALDS Game 5:3-1 loss to Mariners (winner takes all)
  • 1999 ALDS Game 5:12-8 loss to Red Sox (winner takes all)
  • Game 6 of the 1998 ALCS:9-5 loss to the Yankees
  • Game 7 of the 1997 World Series:3-2 loss to the Marlins (winner takes all)

There are some true heartthrobs in there, including Edgar Renteria's clinching single in 1997 and the World Series loss in 2016. Cleveland still hasn't won a postseason elimination game since Game 6 of the 1997 World Series, a quarter of a century ago. back. . They'll have to wait until 2023 to exorcise these demons (or they just won't be able to play a game of elimination).

6. Next

For the Guardians, the offseason. They have been removed. The Yankees now play the Astros in the American League Championship Series. This series begins Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park. It will be the third time in the past six years that the Yankees and Astros have met in the ALCS, with the Astros winning their 2017 and 2019 meetings. Justin Verlander (18-4, 1.75 ERA) and Jameson Taillon (14-5, 3, 96 ERA) will start Game 1. The winner of the American League Championship Series between the Astros and Yankees will face the winner of the National League Championship Series between the Padres and Phillies in the World Series.
